Norwalk Board of Education Policy Committee Meeting August 21, 2007

I. Call to Order: 6:15

II. Discussion of Board Policy and Regulations: A. B. 5111 and 5111(a) Admission to Kindergarten and Early Admission to Kindergarten and Early Admission to First Grade It was discussed that the current policy 5111 Admission be kept as a policy with the change of the date December 31st to January 1st. The drafts for Early Admission to Kindergarten and First Grade will be regulations and lettered accordingly. This will be sent to the Board for Information and Reports on 9/4.

C. 5111.2 and 5111.2(a) Change of Grade Placement It was discussed that the draft policy be a policy entitled Grade Placement and numbered 5111.1 and that the draft regulations follow. The Committee Chair accepted a comment from Mr. Mellion regarding ensuring the language of the policy flows and to consider acquisition of student records and placement until the SRT process begins. This policy and regulations will be sent to the Board for Information and reports on 9/4.

D. 5121 and 5121(a) Grade Policy for Grades K-5 It was discussed that the Policy for Reporting Student Progress in Elementary School should include the first and last paragraphs and the first and last sentences of the second paragraph of the draft. The timeframes in the second paragraph of the draft should be presented as the Regulation. The committee supports a policy to ensure that student progress is reported to parents at specific times. This will be sent to the Board for Information and Reports on 9/4.

E. 5123 and 5123(a) (b) (c) Promotion/Retention/Acceleration The Committee is only addressing this policy for Elementary School. The changes are based on changes in State Statute. The wording will be adjusted to ensure that the draft of the policy and regulations for Elementary flows with the current policy and regulation for Middle and High School. This will be sent to the Board for Information and Reports on 9/4.

F. 6154 and 6154(a) Elementary Homework Policy The Committee did not have time to address this policy.

III. Discussion of calendar and agenda items for future meetings A meeting is scheduled for 9/4 prior to the Board Meeting to review the Homework Policy for Elementary School.

IV. The meeting adjourned at 7:05.
