The curriculum still focuses on social behavior (sportsmanship) but also perfection of skills from one grade level to the next, so that at certain levels the accumulated skills can be put together in a series of steps to create the performance of the sport in the correct manner. There are soft standards that are clustered by grade levels. As far as electives in high school, there are a dozen or more for students to choose from.
Mr. Fuller stated that, as a former high school coach, he looks at the middle school curriculum as preparation for high school. Mr. Polley said this appears to be a modern, enlightened phys ed program.
B. Curriculum Report - Health
A presentation was given on the curriculum for health education by Mr. David Liberatore; Ms. Laura Fiore, and others. The presentation put together all the components of a health and balanced lifestyle. On the one side was health, and on the other was physical education, and Norwalk should be up to date with health, obesity, food pyramid and the Internet. There are built-in assessments to see what students know. The appendix of the report has the State standards, and the report broke them down .
Mr. Vetter stated that the update of the curriculum was long overdue and he expressed his thanks to everyone who worked to put it together.
