On Wed, April 22, Wolfpit fifth grade students will host a colonial crafts fair. The students will showcase their colonial crafts and projects from 2 to 3 PM in their classrooms. Also, to celebrate Earth Day, the fifth graders and parents will be cleaning up the Wolfpit grounds in the morning.
As part of the poetry literacy unit, on April 23, Tracey Elementary School will host a poetry jam at the Barnes & Noble bookstore, 360 Conn. Ave. in Norwalk from 6 to 8 PM. The purpose of the event is to enable students to celebrate achievements in poetry; provide students with an audience; develop students’ public speaking skills; and to give working parents a chance to participate in a school sponsored event.
Tracey Elementary School will host artist James Petruccio on April 24. The presentation will take place at 9:45 AM. Petruccio, who has illustrated over 60 books, traces the history of illustration as a vital art form. Using actual sketches and finished artwork, he takes the audience on a journey through the stages of creating an illustrated book from story to published volume.
He will do 3 presentations that will last 60 minutes including time for questions and answers that are designed for students in grades K-12. Mr. Petruccio will speak to the students about how he became an illustrator, and informs the students about the history and importance of illustration as an art form. He will take the students through the stages of reading a story or poem for the first time while thinking about what the illustrations will look like.
Joan Glass, Norwalk’s K-12 Instructional Specialist for Academically Talented programs and Social Studies, has been nominated to hold a board of directors position for the national organization Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) beginning January 2010. Her nomination is supported by SENG president Wanda Sheard, a Norwalk resident. Joan was additionally nominated to hold a formal seat on the board of directors for the Connecticut Association for the Gifted beginning September, 2009.
Brien McMahon will hold its annual Career Expo on Wed, April 29 from 9 AM to 11 AM. Senior students will be given the opportunity to meet members of the greater Norwalk community who are interested in them and their future. Students will be able to speak to prospective employers and to ask questions about future job opportunities.
The Norwalk High School Music Department in conjunction with the Fathers Club will present a modern classic; Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" as this year's spring musical production. It will be performed on May 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8:00 p.m. in the Norwalk High School auditorium. There will be a special matinee performance on Sunday May 3 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets go on sale Monday March 16.
