Curricular Benchmarks Columbus Magnet School
Music class at Jefferson Magnet Elementary
The Norwalk Public Schools provide a challenging educational program in a safe and creative learning environment where students experience success and achievement. Youth are prepared for advanced education and careers through a wide range of curriculum offerings.


Academically Talented
Programs serve qualifying students in grades 3-8 with emphasis on development of high level critical thinking skills.

Art
For all students in grades K-7 is taught by specialists. Art electives are offered to 8th-12th graders. An Artistically Talented Program is offered to selected 3rd-5th graders.

Athletics
Provide an opportunity for middle and high school students to train regularly under competent coaches. Six sports are offered in middle school and twenty-two in high school.

Bilingual/English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Enables eligible students to acquire English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading writing and thinking through an integrated multicultural approach.

Business Education
Offers office and business courses utilizing the latest technology to prepare students for the world of work and for post-secondary schooling.

Computers
Are used in grades K-12 to enhance student learning.

Foreign Languages
Are available to 6th-8th graders and include French and Spanish. Classical Latin, German, Italian, French, Spanish and Greek are offered in high school. A voluntary after school program, Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools, (FLES) is available for 4th and 5th graders.

Family and Consumer Science
Includes child development with a nursery laboratory, food services, gourmet cooking, tailoring and healthy living.

Industrial Technology
Includes course in drafting, electricity/electronics, graphic arts, small engines, power mechanics and woodworking.

Language Arts/Reading
Encompass a comprehensive integration of listening, speaking, reading, writing and thinking skills. Throughout the curriculum at all grades, an emphasis is placed on fostering an appreciation of language and literature to promote life-long learning.

Mathematics
Offers a broad-based curriculum that strives to meet the needs of all students. A successful Math Mastery program occurs in Grades 3, 4, and 5. Students' math needs are diagnosed by pre-test and groups are taught by objectives to meet those needs.

Music
Is taught to all students by music specialists in K-6. Music is an elective for 8th-12th graders. Strings are offered beginning at grade 3. Band, concert band and jazz ensemble are offered at grade 6.

Physical Education and Health
Include basic skills, physical fitness, sports, lifetime and rhythmic skills, stunts, tumbling, gymnastics and aquatics. Health education is required for every 6th and 9th grader. All elementary school students receive health instruction. In addition, Norwalk Police educators teach 5th graders Drug Abuse Resistance Education.

Science
Instruction is hands-on and process-centered in the elementary and middle schools. Three years of science are required for high school graduation.

Social Studies
Is an integrated K-12 program that includes history, economics, government, psychology and sociology. Elementary students begin with the individual child and move through family, community, state, region and country. The goal is for them to become informed, active citizens in our culturally diverse society.

Special Education
Services are delivered to students with special needs from ages 3-21 in the least restrictive environment. These are in accordance with Federal and State laws. Parents guide to special education.   Guía de educación especial in Connecticut para padres
